Presentation of the artist
Mehdi-Georges Lahlou (b. 1983) is a contemporary multimedia artist who works in Brussels, Paris, Athens and Casablanca.
"When we look at the whole of Mehdi-Georges Lahlou's work to date, three main constants, among others, emerge: one concerns his relationship to the body, the other his relationship to space. We can even say that quite often, the two are intertwined. His relationship to the body is obviously not foreign to his initial training as a dancer, that to space to his work as a "sculptor", probably the most appropriate term to talk about his artistic approach, even if photography - and here we touch on the third point: the question of memory - is never absent either.
Body, space, memory, therefore, form a kind of trilogy in which at least two of the components are found in each of the performances, sculptures or images produced by the artist. All of them contribute, each in their own way, to a misleading evocation of cultural references, religious convictions or social attributes. For him, it is a question of revisiting all of them in the alder of critical practices and the different processes characteristic of contemporary art, in one of its functions which consists in perpetually questioning certain taboos and other convictions of our societies, whether they are of a moral, religious, philosophical, political, social, cultural or aesthetic nature."
