Spirale et désinvolture, 2019
Taken from a photographic series made some twenty years ago, in the streets of Fort de France, on a Saturday afternoon.
The infernal spiral of violence ... Can we know where it starts? Are we naturally violent? Can we control this inherent nature of who we are... Human, or is it a possible instrumentalisation?
It is a single person, a choreographer and dancer by training, probably homeless, at this time of his life, under a bus shelter, who performs a figure, to tell his story, with the hope of finding the course of his life again. In making this photograph, all the fears, all the fears, the abandonment that one can imagine for oneself, reveal the mental fragility, which animates our beings.
Living in a society where judgment, the gaze of the other, determines and dictates our behavior, and according to our positions or our social representations, to be in agreement with this image, it becomes simpler and lighter, to reject, to despise the other, to avoid his gaze. A way for each one of us to "preserve" ourselves from the difficult and violent duty of looking at ourselves.
In staged between places and people, the construction of Robert Charlotte's image takes another shape, more personal. Without symbols and allegories, his point of view, at the same time committed and poetic guides us through portraits and physical landscapes, far and distant from what maintains the livened up world...
A discreet but insistent sight, a patient, contemplative expectation, plunge us in the things of life, in search of intimacy.
The look of Robert Charlotte; social, societal, or humanist; seeks only to describe or analyze the mechanisms of construction of these social groups. The collection and association of images carry of the body, physical traces, loaded with stories, dramas, power and hope holders, already registered, buried in an unconscious little revealed. They are not about a development or an evaluation, but the results of the traces of time and the essence of the human being.

Established in early 2013 in Fort-de-France, espace d’art contemporain 14N 61W presents artists focusing on contemporary art in the Caribbean and around the world.
The gallery supports the intensity and diversity of art-making in the Caribbean region, as well as contributes to its regional and international diffusion.
To date, espace d’art contemporain 14N 61W has presented the works of Caribbean artists of African descent, such as Louisa Marajo, Jean-Ulrick Désert, Sébastien Méhal, Robert Charlotte, Nicolas Derné, Philippe Alexandre, Norville Guirouard-Aizée and Yoan Sorin.
The gallery is committed to offer a renewed perspective of the geographical and historical context of the Caribbean, while promoting and distributing new contemporary visual practices related to the region and beyond.
