Anna, my grandmother, the mountain-woman, 1948 , 2018

Cape Verdean women almost never leave their island, often living amongst themselves without the presence of men, they are a figure of authority. Collage, Ribeira Grande, Santo Antao Island & Nelida, Santiago Island, Cape Verde, 2018.

"The Denial I - Family Portrait" is a dreamlike timeless docu-fiction series based on Alexia Fiasco mysterious family story. As a young black daughter of immigrant, she grew up in denial of her roots in pursuit of integration and with very little knowledge of her family history. Her father abandoned The Cabo Verde Islands at the young age of 13 and never returned. Alexia would discover the country for the first time by herself in 2017. She traveled to the islands in search of her father's past to find answers. She returned from her trip only with more questions and pictures from a family album she never founds.

Alexia Fiasco

Raised in the Parisian suburbs Alexia Fiasco studied photography at the Ostkreuzschule of Berlin before returning to live and work in Paris in 2015.

Fiasco’s background in the arts and social field have shaped her video/photography practice, which draws on both documentary and fine art photography.

She explores the notions of identity and duality, this focus in her practice led her to create the Parisian girls collective "Filles De Blédards (ENG:"daughters of immigrants"), that aims at highlighting the dynamics of an international scene of young artists from ethnic minorities.
