Artist Statement

Expressions are used to represent emotions and thoughts. This work examines the importance of growing up as a boy within the group of boys. The conversations start to change, the competition emerges within the group and the pressure of acting in a certain way grows.

Even though the idea of a “man” can be approached objectively, it is still a path that it is experienced by an individual. There are too many perspectives around the idea of manhood and they are all motivated by a certain ideology. As we grow, there are much more things need to be expressed in one way or the other and some are less allowed. The artwork depicts bodies of boys who are experiencing life differently and they still need to manoeuvre themselves around life itself.

Lerato Motaung

Lerato Motaung (born in 1991 in Katlehong, Germiston) is a visual artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Following his training in drawing at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (2008) and in sculpture in Katlehong Art Center (2009), he received his Diploma in Fine Arts in 2015 from the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria.

For his primary means of expression, mixed media paintings, Motaung draws inspiration from his memories informed by his life experiences in three different environments; the metropolitan area of Johannesburg where he lives and works, the suburban ambiance of Katlehong township and the rural North West Province (where he grew up).
