Diane Victor is interested in animals (gorillas, crocodiles, boars, ...).

During an interview with Artskop3437, Diane Victor declared:

"I am interested in the animal qualities in humans. Because we are all animals to an extent…. It is often a way of representing how people think or how they relates to animals. The violence against the animals as well. We are so responsible for the destruction of the natural areas, many in central Africa. Where chimpanzee and gorillas come from. It is really bad. It’s also reflects the violence that is in our societies. I try to use images of animals as a way of mediating that and saying that animals are part of our nature. They are part of our human nature. How we react to them, and how we become sometimes the bad part of an animal when we are angry or when too much violence is happening.
Also, because I grew up with animals. I was very fortunate to grow up on a small little farm, a little space with cats, dogs, horses…and …they are important to me but it’s also a metaphor for what society does."

Diane Victor

Diane Victor (b. 1964 in Witbank, South Africa) has established herself as a major figure in the South African and International art communities and is renowned for her expert printmaking and draughtsmanship. Victor positions herself within the South African art scene through her bold confrontations with difficult and at times taboo subject matter. Her large scale drawings and etchings demonstrate a command of mark-making, which she uses to render her subjects in affecting detail. At times, her work seems to pose challenges to social and political life in contemporary South Africa, considering issues of corruption, violence and an unequal power distribution.

Having received her BA Fine Arts Degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, with a major in Printmaking, and graduating with distinction – Victor has gone on to win various prestige awards including the Sasol New Signatures Award in 1987. In 1988, Victor became the youngest recipient of the prestigious Volkskas Atelier Award which granted her a ten-month stay at the Cité Internationale des Artes in Paris, France. Over this period, Victor was able to work collaboratively with other experienced printmakers and to observe and reflect on a society very different from her own.

Victor has exhibited at numerous venues around South Africa and internationally, some of which include the UNISA Gallery, Fried Contemporary, MoMA New York, Faulconer Gallery, The Highpoint Center for printmaking, The Gus Fisher Gallery, National Museum of Contemporary Art Oslo, Yale University Art Gal...

About Gallery

Atelier le Grand Village

'Atelier le Grand Village' is a lithography studio located in the hamlet ‘le Grand Village’ in the Charente-Limousine, in the south-west of France. The founder, Francis van der Riet, was born in Zimbabwe and has lived in France since 1988. The aim of the studio is to revive the art of stone lithography by inviting artists in residence from around the world. Artists from several countries, including France, South Africa, the United States, Japan, Brazil and Bulgaria, have already come and worked in the studio.

Atelier le Grand Village has participated in several exhibitions around the world particularly in France, South Africa, Sweden, Portugal and the United States. All works produced at the studio are registered with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Works created at the studio are in collections with the Albertina in Vienna, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the IZIKO South African National gallery and the Victoria & Albert museum in London.

In October 2019, Atelier le Grand Village was invited to the leading art fair dedicated to African art -1.54 Contemporary African Art Fair - London, as a special project by presenting works from Diane Victor, Bambo Sibiya and Mongezi Ncaphayi.
