This year Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art has decided to surprise its public by keeping both its spaces open also in the summertime. The exceptional news comes as an occasion to celebrate the phenomenal passage from our original 30-year-old gallery space in Champollion Street to the new renovated space in Bassiouny Street. The choice not to leave Downtown is indeed intended to reaffirm the historical and artistic importance of Wust El Balad as the cradle and core of Contemporary Art in Cairo.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="818" height="800" src="http://s960436671.onlinehome.fr/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/soad-abdel-rasoul-the-man-and-two-women-mashrabia-gallery.jpg" alt="Soad Abdel Rasoul The man and two women, 2019.
The renovation of a space which used to be an important tailor’s shop back in the last century into their new main exhibiting space allows the gallery not only to become an active part of an ongoing process aimed to revalorise the local urban heritage, but also to make artworks live again in a unique contemporary art venue.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="1024" height="575" src="http://s960436671.onlinehome.fr/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ali-abdelmohsen-slow-war-mashrabia-gallery-artskop-1024x575.jpg" alt="Ali Abdel Mohsen Slow War Mixed media on Cardboard 100 x 35 cm 2017. © Copyright the artist.
Thus, this rivitalising transition is meant to help us get closer to achieving our most ambitious vocation, that is to give life to a contemporary art venue encouraging and promoting experimentation in all its forms, such as installations, huge-size canvases, as well as to challenge conventions and traditions to turn to diverse performative artistic means. For these reasons, the Summer Collection puts together works by artists who have played a fundamental role in shaping Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art’s history and identity.

The selection comprises of established artists whose originality and adeptness we believe in the most, artists who have contributed to the local and international reputation of the gallery, and artists whose talent and determination give us infinite hope.
