About the work

The Protector (Mother), 2018

The work "The Protector (Mother)" is a work created on black card stock. The artist intervenes on this cardboard in two ways: he removes a tiny thickness with a cutter (the white and red lines, there are two levels of cut here) and adds his paint to define its shape.

The artist refers to all the mothers of the world and pays homage to them through this work. He details his artistic purpose in Amharic directly on the work, in the background.

About artist

Leikun Nahusenay

Leikun Nahusenay was born in 1982 in Addis Ababa. While primarily identifying himself as a self-taught artist, he nonetheless completed his art degrees from the Ale School of Fine Arts (2006) and Teferi Mekonnen School (2011). His multidiscipline practice is based in Addis Ababa, where he works from the Nas Gedame studio.

For Nahusenay, the creation of a work of art comes from the mind and the heart. His works are born from pious meditations and are meditations themselves. His recent pastel drawings are concerned with the presence and absence of the spirit in humain body and its connections with the spiritual. He is graduated with woodcut graphics. He consider himself as a line artist. He creates line by line. Music is also a big part of his art. His series of pastel drawings titled Body vs Soul are concerned with models of bodies without faces. During his residency with Versant Sud in Marseille (France) in 2018 he created a tapestry inspired by his pastel drawings.

He is also a member of the Netsa Art Village and contributes to the growing Ethiopian art scene. His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions, including Addis Calling 2 Group Show, at Addis Fine Art (2016), Flying Spoons sculptural exhibition at Asni Gallery in Addis Ababa (2015), Draw Me A Castle at Alliance Ethio-Française, Addis Ababa and Paris (2011), Future Makers international group photo exhibition at the National Museum of Ethiopia and Goethe Institute (2012) and The Fine Line Between, Lela Gallery (2008). About Gallery

Versant Sud

Versant Sud is an artist's residency whose main mission is to develop artistic and cultural projects in two territories: the Southern region of France and African countries.

The two geographical areas have one thing in common: they are territories marked by the virtual absence of an art market. Artists developing their activity in these two areas face buyers who are still under-represented or buying outside the territory.

To promote these two territories, Versant Sud is deployed on several axes:

The organization of an annual cross-artistic residency program between Marseille (France) and an African capital; coordination of artistic and cultural projects for other structures and/or institutions; design-oriented training workshops for art schools, the proposal for conferences focusing on the African perspective, selling works of art created by the artist in residence.

The launch season 2018 / 2019 of the artistic residencies is dedicated to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. In October 2019, Versant Sud attended the leading fair dedicated to contemporary African Art - 1.54 Contemporary African Art Fair - in London and presented works from Leikun Nahusenay.
