The artist has always enjoyed challenging the notion that working in ceramics is limiting in size, shape, and function. She is perpetually offended that ceramic work always seems like the poor relative of fine art, and perpetually labelled as craft.These pieces force the viewer to look all around the piece, and each angle has a fresh view.

She is constantly inspired by nature, and the random symmetry thereof. With these pieces she investigated the effect of disrupting her usual fairly controlled surface treatment with apparently randomly placed protruding elements, which, due to the surfaces on them, reminds the viewer of nature despite there being no other literal reference to it.

Louise Gelderblom often has a painterly approach to the surfaces of her work. To a very large degree her work is not functional, although she makes it in traditionally functional forms such a pot shapes, plate shapes and bowl shapes. Some “pot shapes” have no openings. For instance, most of the work is too big to use as flowerpots.

Although her work is mostly in neutral and natural colours, the artist does actually work within quite a large colour range. Her staples, however, remain black, white, grey, this refers back to her graphic design background. Often her sgraffito line-work provides the tonal difference in her work, rather than colour differences.

Ranging from Louise’s signature sgrafitto surfaces to complex painterly vessels, these pieces appear minimal on first glance but offer space for contemplation of the complexity of detail.

Louise’s production process is rooted in a meditative practice. From hand-building the vessels one coil at a time and making each mark to the extensive and carefully planned process of grazing and firing. Louise’s process in her work is very specific, meditative and focused.

Louise Gelderblom

Louise Gelderblom is a South African designer working in clay. She is known for making bespoke, hand built ceramics in her studio at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town.

Gelderblom regards the work as a representation of a continuous internal dialogue. Each piece follows on from the piece that was made before. It is as if the ceramics are brief voyeuristic insights into the her life and mind- informed and inspired by literature, typography, repetition in the built and natural environment, percussion, travel, human connection and the infinitely subtle nuances thereof. The basis of this intellectual and personal expereince informs the shape, mark-making and surface treatment of Gelderblom’s work, creating substance and integrity in the finished forms. Although the gestures and marks appear to be spontanious and random they are in fact highly intentional and deliberate. Each piece that Gelderblom works on creates a moment within which she engages with her current reality and inspiration.

The results of Gelderblom’s art making process are ceramic forms that tell a story of perserverance, cultural identity and South Africa, reconciling the connections between traditional clay practice and high end design. The maker’s hands are present in every detail as a result of the tactile method of building with coils. When engaging with Gelderblom’s designs it becomes clear that this deeply personal production process encourages an intimate insight into her mind and experience.

Louise Gelderblom Ceramics Studio

Louise Gelderblom has a BAFA from the University of Stellenbosch, where she specialized in graphic art and design, and photography. Her interest in ceramics developed over a number of years and since 1992 she has focused primarily on the production of fine art ceramics that blur the boundaries between the ornamental, the functional and the conceptual. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the inaugural South African EDIDA award for Best Craft Producer. The emphasis in the studio is on the production of high quality art pieces, rather than large numbers of simplified forms. The sizes range from 70cm to 250cm for the vessels and composite totems.

The studio is situated in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, which makes it very accessible for professionals in the design industry, as well as collectors and tourists. It is very experienced in preparing work for freight to international destinations.
