Pebofatso Mokoena
Born in 1993 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In 2014, he obtained his N.Dip (Visual Art) from the University of Johannesburg and subsequently, in addition to working towards his BTech degree, Pebofatso teaches drawing and presentation at the UJ Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. Coming from the world of printmaking, Pebofatso Mokoena's practice evolves towards painting. This is formally underlined by the precision of the marking and the division of space. He is passionate about the micro and macro scales surrounding subjects encompassing politics, architecture and the environment.
Recently his work has shifted to issues of movement, the consideration of human beings as data and how humans can be contained in narrow spaces.
Pebofatso Mokoena's work has received early recognition and support both locally and internationally. Mokoena has had three solo exhibitions - Internal Probes at David Krut, The Pebofatso Experience at the HZRD, Inside Jobs at the Bag Factory as well as exhibitions such as Diptych; Disclosure at SMAC; Fresh Produce 2014, Inner Nature, Fortunes Remixed and South African Voices: A New Generation of Printmakers in Washington DC and is part of the collection of the Springs Art Library, the South African Embassy Art Collection (in Washington, D.C.), and the JP Morgan Global Collection, among other private collections.
