With their spiritual influence and authority, they subjected others in the name of a supreme spiritual being. They exploited their naivety or ignorance of others using religion as a drug to sedate their will for independence, individual reflection and freedom.

It created confusion and loss of identity, precisely in Africa, where syncretism, overlap and spiritual confusion rule.

Steve Bandoma

Steve Bandoma graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Kinshasa in 2004. During his studies, he becomes part of the artist collective "Librisme Synergie". He uses several medium and techniques such as performance, photography, painting but also collage. He produces his collages with images from magazines that he reuses giving them a modern meaning and, as he says, "A new life".

The mix of techniques brings a dynamic into his artworks; an aesthetic inspired by the bustle of Kinshasa and reflects a new African society in constant evolution. With the combination of drawing, color splashes and collage, Bandoma composes an incredible aesthetic of explosion, or rather of implosion, chaos and humor, often on the background of political distress.

Faces, limbs, animated figurines, fetishes assemble to give life to what seems to be a disjointed and deconstructed composition that is actually well thought-through and carefully composed. His work is assembled into series according to the comment they make about politics, culture or the news. In 2005 he moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where his career started taking off. In 2009 he did an artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris; in 2011 he exhibited at Art Basel and in London before going back to Kinshasa in 2012, where he exhibits at the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles and the Institut Français. In 2018-2019, he did an artist residence and exhibited at the Grassi Museum für Volkerkunde zu Leipzieg.

MAGNIN-A

MAGNIN-A is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2009 in Paris by André Magnin and directed by Philippe Boutté. They are acknowledged experts in Contemporary and Modern African Art. Sharp eyed for new talents, the MAGNIN-A gallery represents established and emerging artists.

MAGNIN-A works with passion and determination for the promotion and the diffusion of its artists' work on the greatest Arts Fairs and International Exhibitions.

Independent curator since the late 1970's, André Magnin started working on non-western Contemporary Art in 1989 with the historic exhibition " Magiciens de la Terre" at the Centre Pompidou and at the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, exhibition for which he was co-curator. He then became the head of the C.A.A.C.-The Pigozzi Collection, the most important collection of African Contemporary Art. During 20 years he shared his life between Europe and Africa. In 1996 he met Philippe Boutté who became his closest collaborator.
